Claiming Our Independence: Union County’s Role in the Revolutionary War
We all know New Jersey is the land that we love, but have you ever considered the significance our home has had on the foundation of the United States? New Jersey played a critical role in the American Revolution. Throughout the entire state, we are surrounded by rich and powerful moments in our history. Union County is no exception!
The battles fought in Union County, NJ were pivotal in the United States gaining its independence. On the historical marker at the corner of Galloping Hill Road and Colonial Road in Roselle Park is the phrase "Here the British Turned." This refers to the Battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield, after which, the British Army turned around and left New Jersey. As two of the final battles in the northern colonies, this ultimately led to the United States winning their independence from Britain.
